AbouT SMART-CARE
Smart-Care was created by Rossie and Les Smart in 1990. As a nurse Rossie saw a need in the Ottawa Valley for clothing that is easy for people with mobility issues to put on and wear. She worked with Canadian manufacturers to create a line of clothing that was both functional and would withstand the harsh environment of institutional laundry.
After 25 years the Smarts decided it was time to retire but were reluctant to sell their pride and joy to just anyone. They found the couple they were looking for in Karen and Bill Colbert. At the time Karen was working at Island View Retirement Suites, one of the homes they visited twice a year. After a lengthy interview process, the deal was made!
BILL & KAREN COLBERT
Bill and Karen Colbert are both Ottawa Valley natives. They have lived in Burnstown for the past 21 years and both have worked their entire careers in Arnprior.
Karen is a certified dementia practitioner and has worked 11 years at Island View Retirement Suites in Arnprior. There she was a Life Enrichment Coordinator working with the residents to create an active and fulfilling experience for each and every one of them. Reluctantly she quit her job there to move on to the next chapter in her life, to be an entrepreneur and business owner of Smart-Care.
Bill has spent his career moving up the ladder at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and now with Pillar 5 Pharma, an independent contract pharmaceutical manufacturer. Although he is an integral part of the new Smart-Care Clothing he will continue in his current position as a technical manager at Pillar 5.
